The power of storytelling in healing and advocacy
In our Sunshine Kids programme, we create safe spaces where children can express themselves through art, play, and storytelling. For many children who have experienced trauma, words are not always accessible. But through drawing, drama, and creative play, they find ways to process their experiences and imagine new possibilities.
One girl in our programme used to sit silently in the corner, never engaging with activities or other children. Then one day, she picked up a paintbrush and began to create. Her paintings told stories of pain and resilience, fear and hope.
As she painted, she began to speak. First in whispers to her facilitator, then in quiet conversations with other children, and eventually in group sharing circles. Her art became a bridge from silence to voice.
Today, she is one of the most active participants in the programme, supporting other children who are finding their own paths to expression. Storytelling—in whatever form it takes—has a unique power to heal and transform.
