Field reflection: Partnership as a practice of humility

A field visit reminder: partnership is a practice of humility, not charity. The people we walk with are the experts on their own lives and communities.

During a recent field visit to our community partners in Cameroon, I was reminded of an essential truth: partnership is a practice of humility, not charity.

We arrived with plans and frameworks, ready to implement our programme. But our partners gently guided us to slow down and listen. They explained the specific dynamics of their community—the relationships, the histories, the cultural contexts that our frameworks couldn’t capture.

As we listened, our “programme” transformed into something richer and more responsive. What we had designed as a series of workshops became community dialogues that honoured local knowledge and leadership. What we thought would be straightforward became nuanced and collaborative.

This experience reinforced a core principle of AWE’s work: the people we walk with are the experts on their own lives and communities. Our role isn’t to impose solutions but to support processes that communities lead and own.

True partnership requires us to set aside our assumptions and trust in the wisdom of those we serve alongside.
